Chapter 3
What is matter?
Matter is the stuff that the universe is composed of. It's characteristics are mass and it occupies space.
States of Matter
What are properties of Matter?
Physical Properties- characteristics of a substance that can be observed and measured
Intrinsic physical properties- density, color, odor, hardness, boiling and freezing
point, and states of matter
Extrinsic physical properties- mass, volume, dimensions, and length
Chemical Properties-the ability to form new substances under given conditions
Basic Terms
* Matter cannot be created or destroyed but it can be changed into different forms
* An atom is the smallest basic unit of matter
* An element is a pure chemical substance consisting of one type of atom
* Protons- positive charge
* Neutrons- no charge
* Electrons- negative charge
What is a Compound?
A compound is a substance made of atoms of different elements bonded together in a certain ratio.
What is a Mixture?
A mixture is materials that have variable composition and is not chemically bonded
Example: Coffee, dirt, air, salad
What is a pure substance?
Pure substances are materials that always have the same composition
Examples: Pure Water, C
Homogeneous and Heterogenous
Homogeneous mixture- it is the same proportion throughout the material
Heterogeneous mixture- it contains regions of different proportion
